Definition of "Life Coach"

What is a life coach? A general definition of "life coach" is a thinking and accountability partner. What does that mean? It means that you and your coach collaborate to come up with the plan that works best for you.

Your life coach doesn't tell you what to do, doesn't judge you, and doesn't have her own agenda. With a good coaching partnership you truly act as a team to further your personal goals and vision!

You bring the agenda to each session, you are in charge of being open to change, you are responsible for following through on your goals.

Sounds interesting, doesn't it?

Find out if YOU could benefit from life coaching by completing this Coachability Assessment.

What is a life coach? Your key to success! Some coaches focus on a narrow niche while others coach on general issues. My specialty is coaching women to feel more confident, connected, and accomplished. Read more about my life coaching methods here.

No matter their specialty, all good life coaches should:

  • Help you set and achieve realistic goals
  • Listen deeply to what you do and don't say
  • Ask powerful and pointed questions
  • Function as a nonjudgmental and agenda-free thinking partner
  • Operate with the belief that you are your own life expert

Interested in A Life Coach for YOU?

Having your own life coach is a very personal and powerful relationship, one that requires that your coach is respectful and understanding and that she challenges you to accurately assess your goals and celebrate your successes.

Finding a life coach that's a good match for you is the first step in gaining more power and confidence. You deserve to start your self-improvement journey with just the right person to support and guide you to feel and act your best.

After you start coaching, assessing your progress is essential. You need to ask yourself no matter what, is life coaching working for you? Here's what successful life coaching looks like so you'll know when your coaching experience is going well (and when it's not).

When you think about finally achieving those elusive goals (getting into better shape, reducing stress, feeling happier, etc), hiring a life coach for personal development may be just the door you need to open to start feeling more confident, more fulfilled, and more in control of your life.

What is a Life Coach NOT?

Because life coaching is such a new profession, it is often confused with counseling or consulting. While there are some similarities, it is essential to understand the differences.

In general, counseling tends to focus a lot on working through past traumatic experiences and healing emotional pain. The therapist is the "expert" in the relationship.

Life coaches, on the other hand, approach people from a very different angle. In the coaching partnership, the focus is primarily present and future oriented, helping you set goals and plan concrete action steps to take. You bring your own agenda to each session. Your progress is completely up to you as you are accountable for your actions and successes.

Consultants are experts who are paid to accomplish certain goals and give answers. They provide invaluable services for many organizations and individuals.

Coaches are experts in coaching. As your life coach, I am in no way tied to any particular outcome for you as my client. This means that there is no judgment passed on whatever you may choose to do or not do. I am there to assist you to move forward in whatever direction you choose!

Talking with a coach is also very different from talking with your best friend! Have you ever really needed to vent to your friend only to discover that she needs to vent to you too? Or maybe your friends just aren't there for you as much as you'd like. Or maybe your friends are too involved in your life to provide unbiased and judgment-free support.

With a life coach, the focus is all you, every session!

It's an amazing experience that will change your life...for good!
