What Types of Communication
Cause Problems for You?

There are several types of communication that cause problems for many of us.

In fact, after a frustrating exchange with someone you may find yourself asking, "Just what IS effective communication anyway?"

This page will answer that question, describe the types of communication that are most challenging, and help you to improve your communication skills.

What Is Effective Communication?

Effective communication is the cornerstone of strong, healthy relationships. Relationships begin and develop through communication. And, as you already know, the quality of communication has a direct impact on the quality of the relationship. This is why effective communication is crucial, as we all yearn for close healthy relationships throughout our lives.

Communication is what we do to give and get understanding. It is an exchange of words and meanings, a two-way process of sending and receiving messages. Effective communication happens when the message that is sent is the same message that is received. Problems arise when messages on either end are misunderstood!

The kids' game of "Telephone" exemplifies how easy it is to have ineffective communication!

"Thank you very much Corinna! I got so much out of the phone call and especially your input this evening. There were so many points made that may appear simplistic but were suddenly so vital to my goal setting and accomplishing my goals. I realize more why I haven't been able to move forward on many of the things I've wanted to accomplish lately." -- Linda B., Nashville, TN

Challenging Types of Communication

You may find that you are more successful with some types of communication more than others. People often find that communication in their personal relationships can be challenging. Because the quality of these relationships often affects how we feel about ourselves, it's easy to understand why good communication in personal relationships is so important.

Or maybe your most frustrating type of communication is specifically with the opposite sex. It's no secret that men and women tend to communicate differently. While neither side communicates in the "wrong" way, it is pretty clear that those differences can cause a lot of misunderstanding and hurt feelings.

Learning about nonverbal gender differences may help you and your partner have more realistic expectations of each other and also help you to communicate in a way that is easier for your partner to understand. And that can only help to improve your relationship!

It is also very common for mothers and daughters to have communication difficulties. If you find yourself in this situation, or know someone else who is, you'll find some helpful information on this page.

Good communication is the basis for good relationships, so if you find yourself yearning for better connections with others, analyzing and improving your communication habits is a great place to start.

Improving Your Communication Skills

Improving your communication skills isn't about luck, it's about understanding the essential components and developing them! For example, did you realize research indicates that nonverbal communication accounts for up to 90% of your message?

And, even though you could probably name a few types of nonverbal communication, I think you will be surprised at how many may be under your radar. Misinterpretations of body language can have unintended consequences in conversations, so learn more about its function and the role it plays in communication.

It's also so important to be aware of how you come across to others. If you're having trouble feeling engaged, respected, or connected to others, learn which of the three main communication styles most fits you and how it may be impacting how others see you.

If you're interested in improving your communication skills, learn more about the main areas of communication and read some important tips for becoming a great conversationalist.
