Telephone Coaching
Telephone coaching is the coaching choice most of my clients make. But it’s helpful to be familiar with some of the pros and cons of coaching on the phone so you can make an informed decision that’s right for you. Since I don’t offer in person coaching, I’ll be comparing and contrasting being on the phone to
life coaching online.
Pros: - Convenient--Coaching over the phone is very convenient. You can be coached from home, from the office, or from the car. You can attend your coaching sessions while on vacation or out of town for business. You don’t have to factor in driving time to and from an appointment. You can be in your comfiest pajamas snuggled up in your cushiest chair at home.
- Cost Effective--With telephone coaching, there are no parking fees, no gas costs, no built-in overhead costs. Regular telephone charges apply, but if you have a calling plan that may be a minuscule cost.
- Anonymity--If you’re nervous about starting life coaching, sessions over the phone can give you a sense of distance and privacy that may help you to feel secure. You don’t have to be concerned about your appearance or your body language and can instead focus just on the conversation at hand.
- Effective Back and Forth--Much progress can be made in phone coaching sessions because if either the coach or the client has a question or a comment, it’s easy to put it out there and for the other to respond.
Cons: - Distractions--It’s easier to be distracted when you’re on the phone. Often this is because you aren’t in a sterile environment and also because you aren’t making eye contact with your coach.
- In the Moment--Sometimes we need time to process through a discussion or to let a new idea really sink in. But in a coaching call, those moments may pass too quickly without client or coach being able to absorb every tidbit.
- No Record--Because our coaching calls aren’t recorded, there’s no way to listen to a session again. If you’re a person who prefers to re-experience an important conversation in order to more deeply think about what had been discussed, telephone coaching may not be the right fit for you.
No matter which option you choose, all initial sessions are held over the phone. So you will get a chance to experience how that feels for you before deciding on which method you’d like to continue with!
