Finding a Life Coach

Finding a life coach can feel like a daunting task—Google “life coach” and you’ll get over 33,000,000 results. Yowza!

And if you’ve never hired a life coach before you may feel overwhelmed and uncertain of what to look for.

There may be a number of issues that are important to you including cost, experience, schedule availability, responsiveness, and personal connection.

Many of these factors are influenced by your personal requirements—so how do you go about deciding who will be a good fit?

First, I suggest that you peruse a prospective coach’s website carefully.

  • Does she seem to offer information of value?
  • What is her background and experience?
  • Are her services, fees, and contact information easy to find?
  • Does she share any testimonials from past clients?
  • What is your general sense of the coach after reading through her material?

I appreciate the help and support you have given me at a very tough time in my life. – Kim Smith, Pearland, TX

Second, I suggest that you contact the coach with any questions or concerns you may have.
  • Does she respond in a timely manner?
  • What is her communication like? (friendly, terse, rambling, etc)
  • Does her response seem personal and does she genuinely seem interested in you and your concerns?

Third, I strongly suggest that you schedule your free sample session. Most coaches offer this and it’s the perfect way to further discuss the issues that you’re facing, how the coach thinks she can be of service, and what action steps you might take next--all without paying a dime! (Click here for an idea of what a sample session with me looks like.)

Most importantly, a sample session lets you decide if you’ve got a good personal connection with the coach. I believe this is the most important factor to consider when finding a life coach for you. If you don't connect with your life coach on a personal level, will you feel comfortable opening up and allowing yourself to be coached to your best ability?

When Finding a Life Coach, Ask Yourself These Questions:

1. What was my first impression of her? Was she pleasant, interested, professional?

2. Did I sense that she cared about my situation and how she could help or was she just trying to get a new client?

3. Would I feel comfortable sharing personal information with her?

4. Will her personality and style work in my life right now?

5. How did I feel after our first correspondence-- relieved, anxious, excited, on edge?

6. Can this coach do what I need her to do for me?

Feeling well matched with a coach is so important. And it is equally important for the coach to feel well matched to her clients too. That’s why I try to respond to a prospective client’s inquiries very thoroughly—so that I can get a better understanding for her concerns and how I might be of service, and so she can get a feeling for who I am and what I can offer.

A life coach should be thorough, sincere, interested, and knowledgeable and you should definitely get a sense for this through your initial interactions with her. And if you follow the steps I outlined above, you’ll be sure to have a good idea on whether a particular coach is right for you!

If you've not found what you needed on my website, another good resource is www.life-coach-directory.com. You'll find a wide listing of life coaches with a variety of specialties and fees. Best of luck in finding a life coach for you!
